Emerging from Winter – gardening in the Ecovillage

As we move into Kambarang, (also known as the season of Birth) this is definitely the perfect time for getting out in the garden.

In the Ecovillage, every lot in a cluster garden is allocated a substantial Exclusive Use Area (EUA) for growing food. These are beautiful and productive gardens, benefiting from the wealth of knowledge, support and resources shared amongst neighbours, as well as abundant water in summer from our Ecovillage dams. Despite the cold weather, our residents have been growing rocket, beetroot, spinach, silverbeet and peas and gearing up for potatoes and sweet potatoes (with a little covering up for warmth). For those that are just starting out with their new EUAs October is a good moment for getting the warmer season cover crop seeds (grains, legumes etc) down to feed the soil and build up organic matter.

It’s also time to get the spring onions and leek seeds started in trays, and if you haven’t already – get that hothouse out of the shed for the tomato, cucumber, pumpkin and capsicum seeds to be sown. It will be time to plant them soon! With a little liquid feeding each fortnight, you’ll have an abundance of healthy seedlings ready to go in the ground when the weather starts warming up.
